Name Board – Basic Letter Recognition Activity
Updated: Sep 10, 2019
Name Board is a simple, fun, and creative way of practicing letters and teaching your toddlers how to write their name!
What you’ll need:
White kraft/butcher paper
Thick sharpie marker
5 Easy Steps:
Roll out a piece of the kraft paper and write your child’s full name (not a nickname) on it.
Then, roll out a large piece of the kraft paper and write down your child’s name a number of times, while leaving a letter or two out each time.
Make sure to leave enough space for a Post-it wherever you leave a letter out.
Try leaving out more and more letters – progressively making the activity more challenging.
On the Post-its, write down the missing letters and tape on the wall.
Now let's play -
Sit with your children and go over the letters in their name and the different sounds they each make.
Instruct them to complete all the names, just like the example above!
Making a fun song to emphasize each syllable of the name can make it easier for your child to remember.
This teaching technique is totally adjustable and versatile – you can try teaching your child any word with it - animal names, colors, and more. You can also adjust it to different developmental levels.
